Modern parents are much more engaged than previous generations. In fact, studies show that working moms today spend an equal amount of time with their children as 1970s stay-at-home moms did. Furthermore, parents are spending substantially more money raising their children.

Nonstop Monitoring And Teaching

According to an article from The New York Times, there is now a much more eminent threat that children in the United States will not be as successful as their parents. This is new, as past generations took it for granted that their children would automatically reach the same social and economic strata as their parents. Now, motivated by economic anxieties and the fear that their children will not be as well off as they are, parents put forth every effort to position their children for success from a very early age. That means constant attention and enrollment in a wide range of educational programs.

Parents are doing much more than simply being present with their children. They are devoting more time to reading to them, playing with them and helping them learn and grow. They are spending a substantial amount of money at a much earlier age on education, music classes, sports and more. In the past, the amount of money a parent spent on a child reached a high during the high school years. Now that amount is at its highest before age six and from the years 18 to 20.

Of course, the demands of modern parenting have an impact on child custody matters, as parents are much more invested in spending time with their children. This can lead to conflict between parents. Parents may benefit from working with an experienced attorney to help them ascertain their goals and outline a plan to pursue custody arrangements that will truly be in the child’s best interest.
